I recently spent more than a week on the road, driving from Colorado to Wisconsin and back again. Road trips can be fraught with risks and problems, especially when driving a fourteen year old Honda Civic. In my case, however, it was an opportunity to demonstrate how being One With Everything made life go smoothly.
Though I had a goal of arriving at a certain time, I was conscious to not feel hurried, and was content to go with the universal flow and arrive whenever the universe wanted me to. I believe this contributed to my ability to avoid delays, ironically enough. In both Nebraska and Iowa, as I was headed eastbound, the westbound lanes were stopped or closed due to bad accidents. Even when I hit Minnesota, and traffic ground to a halt, I grabbed my road atlas from the back seat and quickly found a route that avoided delays and took me into a part of Wisconsin I had never seen before.
A big test occurred on my way home. I pulled off the highway at 4 a.m. in Kadoka, South Dakota to wash the bugs from my windshield. When I went to start my car, there was dead silence, and it refused to do anything for me. I checked the fuses and looked for loose wires, but everything seemed okay (except for a loose battery bracket). It would have been easy to get really depressed and begin thinking of how this could become a major delay and costly repair, but instead I viewed it as an opportunity to practice my one-ness.
I went inside the truckstop and asked if there were a mechanic nearby and when I might call him. I was told there was, and that he came to work about 7:30. I took my camera and laptop upstairs to a "drivers lounge" and recharged my laptop battery as I offloaded, edited, and posted photos I had taken since leaving Minneapolis over twelve hours earlier. I shared my status on Facebook, and told my followers that I expected the problem to be minor.
Sure enough, when the mechanic opened the hood, he saw that corrosion on one of the battery terminals was preventing a good connection. After fixing that and the loose bracket, I followed him back to his shop so I could pay by credit card. While there, I asked the two people in the office where I could get breakfast. They recommended a place that, from the outside, didn't look like somewhere I would otherwise might have stopped.
While waiting for my meal to arrive, I grabbed a newspaper from a nearby table. It turned out to be the previous day's paper, and only the sports section. On the back page was an old black and white photo of a lodge that had burned down many years earlier. It stood at Sylvan Lake, in western South Dakota. I wanted to visit somewhere in the state I had never been, so I asked the waitress where I could find Sylvan Lake. Once I got there, I discovered that it was not just a pretty (and popular) lake, but the trailhead for the hike to Harney Peak - the highest point in South Dakota. It's been quite some time since I added a high point to my collection, so I was eager to make the seven-mile round-trip hike to and from the peak.
The next day, while taking a lesser-used state highway through Wyoming, I came upon a traffic stoppage. The road was completely torn up, and eight cars and trucks were waiting in the hot sun for the chance to proceed. Instead of baking in my car and fuming about the delay, I grabbed my camera and began walking around the roadside taking photos. Before long, our chance to move came, and that was the last delay of my trip.
To me, this entire experience is an example of remaining One With Everything, and following the path the Universe has made. So many chances to get frustrated were avoided by remaining positive and looking for the opportunities that these otherwise inconveniences presented. By changing one's outlook and adopting a different attitude toward unplanned events, one is able to enjoy experiences that could easily be missed.
